UPDATE after the first week of school!

Since joining the GSD Board 3.5 years ago, I have been working on two major initiatives for Cottonwood HS: 

First, Granite School District is now the Charter Authorizing Entity for AMES (Academy of Math, Engineering & Science)

Second, in partnership with SLCC, Cottonwood HS will be launching the state's first associates degree program in a public high school.

Early literacy cannot be over emphasized. If our students learn to read early, they will then read to learn for the rest of their elementary and secondary education careers.

We must prioritize investment in literacy for grades K-3. 

Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs were created in Utah in 2008. These programs provide the opportunity for students to become bilingual in languages such as Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and French. But more oversight by the District is needed to properly manage these largely school-based programs.

Our school district is facing declining birth rates and smaller elementary school populations. We have both a fiscal and educational responsibility to ensure our students are in the best possible school environment we can provide.

This fall, Utahns will vote on a proposed constitutional amendment that, if passed, will change the way education is funded. Such change is expected to have significant impact on both budgeting and fiscal policy considerations. My financial and business background will be imperative as GSD navigates such unprecedented changes.

While it is common sense that students are more successful when their parents are engaged, it is also supported by empirical data. We must do more to create parent engagement at both the school and at home.
